Often a patient will present with a toothache and upon initial examination everything seems fine. In this case we have a well-constructed gold crown with no visible defects.
A radiograph (or xray) reveals the sordid truth: a large carious lesion under the back part of the crown and hidden from human eyes by the nice arrangement of gums at the margin of the crown. In other words, It looked good on the outside, but crappy on the inside.
As a result, what appeared to be a possibly minor problem turned into a catastrophic situation and led to the extraction of what was once one of the formost chewing teeth in this mouth.
The Moral?
Let's make sure what we show on the outside is firmly supported and in harmony with how really are in our hearts. President Uchtdorf's Saturday afternoon conference talk on being real ties in with this.
