We can see by the headstamp that these are both 243 Winchester cases.

Yes, the mouth of the one on the left is substantially larger than the one on the right.
Any ideas why?

This is a stumper one. But I'm going to say that the case with the bigger mouth is a hollow point bullet and the other one is regular bullet. That's a far fetch guess.

A hint. They both started out with the same size case mouth diameter.

Ok, here's the deal. A 243 Win fired in a 243 win rifle will expand only enough to release the bullet,which expansion is basically limited to .243 of an inch, the diameter of the round and the bore of the barrel. It will look like the one o. The right.
If that same 243 Win is fired out of a gun chambered for the 308 Win the case mouth will expand to fill the larger diameter chamber and the undersized bullet will rattle down the 30 caliber barrel with a resultant loss of accuracy and power.
Since the 243 was developed from the 308 all dimensions are basically the same except for case mouth diameter so one must be careful when using the two cartridges at the range at the same time.
This no-no happened when we had both types of rifle and both types of ammo at the range one day. While 308 will not chamber in a243 rifle the opposite is not true and one who shall not be named did indeed shoot a couple of rounds of 243 through Grandpa's Model 88 and we ended up with the subject of today's Photo Quiz.
