Last weekend I spent the better part of a day and a half getting certified as an NRA instructor in five basic courses: Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Muzzleloading Rifle and Range Safety Officer. Recent changes in the BSA policy requires that all scout shooting events be supervised by an NRA certified Basic Instructor. Our stake's YM presidency spearheaded a training event for both the Kanab and Kaibab Stakes. I was the rep from our ward and learned a lot about range safety. I already knew most of the other nuts and bolts stuff about the firearms, but the safe handling procedures and drills were very informative. The format was much like that at Timberline where you learn by seeing, doing, and then teaching it yourself. Actually, the BSA calls it the Teaching EDGE (Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, Enable).
