On the way home from work I stopped to get the mail. As I looked over my shoulder I noticed the unusual cloud formation just west of me. A large swath of the clouds looked like puffy cotton balls.
When I got home I looked up cloud formations (thanks, internet!) and found out this is called a mammatus cloud, for reasons that are obvious in hindsight. Live and learn.
