Drove out to 8-Mile Gap the other evening after work. Took the Rhino and blew a little carbon out of it! Just before you turn to go through the gap there was this huge field of stunted sunflowers. Maybe they're a dwarf variety, adapted for living in arid areas. In the background is the entrance to Johnson Canyon.
At one spot I stopped and found a way up through the chocolate cliffs and took this picture of my trusty steed far below. The chocolate cliffs are probably the least-known member of the "Grand Staircase." It's the ledges you see between Fredonia and Kanab. While they can be fairly sizable, they are not as consistently big, well-formed, or easily viewed as the vermillion cliffs, the whites, and the pinks.
Time to head home.
