Hanging Around

A few years ago my two younger sons and I were 4-wheeling up Kanab Canyon north of Peekaboo. We were following the creek bed when we came upon this section of fence hanging in the air. It appears that occasional floods have washed away the sandy soil that originally supported the fence.

Now for the semi-deep thought (feel free to skip this part). On my journeys through the internet I have occasionally encountered sites that purport to be LDS in nature but seem to revel in being contradictory, self-involved, and stuck in minutia and historical and doctrinal motes. I wonder how often we are left "hanging" without realizing it when we neglect the foundation or basis of our testimonies. We get hung up on the lost tribes, blacks and the priesthood, Joseph Smith treasure hunting, Pharisaic-like concern for the letter rather than the spirit of the gospel and forget the basic principles of the gospel. In the January issue of the Ensign, Elder Nelson says we are using Gospel Principles as the Priesthood/Relief Society manual for the next couple of years to reinforce and reintroduce the basic principles of the church. So not only individually, but as a church, we are being reminded that testimonies are to be built on firm foundations and not sandy soil subject to the elements.
