Return to White Pocket

In September, Dad and I drove out to White Pocket.  I wrote briefly about our trip here and here.  It was quite an adventure, especially after it started raining buckets.  It also probably jarred Dad's kidney stone loose that caused such havoc just a few days later.

This time, it was the boys and I, out for a ride while Peg was out of town.

Matt making his way down one of the fantastic formations at White Pocket.

A little pocket of green on the western edge.  Some time in the past ranchers built a now crumbling dike across the edge to catch the runoff from all the slick rock.

Here's the aforementioned dike.  It never ceases to amaze me where those guys put their cows.  Anywhere there was a little grazing and water you'll find fencing, wooden troughs, tanks, etc.

Just to the east of White Pocket we ran across this panel with big horn sheep and deer on it.  (Our thanks to Barry Glazier who told us how to find this out of the way gem.)

We closed out a great day with a fire, pop, and potato chips!  Well, we also had hot dogs and pork and beans.

The plan on Saturday was to head for the rim where we could take in the vista of House Rock Valley and Marble Canyon.  Instead of riding the ATVs all the way I thought we could get a little closer and so we loaded them up.  Well, we went a little too far and ended up getting stuck in the sand.*  The picture above shows the unloaded trailer hooked up to the Rhino, which in turn is hooked by the winch cable, another cable, and a tow strap to the Ford.  Getting out delayed us long enough we decided to make our way back to our starting point.
*Sidetrail:  It just seems to be a law that whenever we head out somewhere, something happens.  We've been stuck, had flat tires, overheating machines, torrential rains, snow, etc.

Trying to figure out just exactly where we are.  Even the latest maps from the BLM are not particularly helpful and the signage on the Monument is a little lacking.  At least from my point of view.

Our reward for getting our without further mishaps was an early dinner at Jacob Lake.
