During Jared's visit we dusted off the ATV's and went for a little spin. It seems we don't take the time, or have the time, to get out as much as we used to.
It's always best to be in front and let somebody else eat your dust! This trail goes from the turnoff to the sands down to Mt. Carmel Junction.
Once at the bottom we turned and followed the East Fork of the Virgin River down through the Barracks. Several crossings allowed us ample opportunity to get wet! (Just ask Matt.)
After several miles the trail ascends the south side of the canyon up a very, very sandy shoulder. Power and speed are essential here! This is a look back up the canyon toward the "Y".
Kinda reminiscent of Checkerboard Mesa in Zion, isn't it?
After we topped out we had a fine view of the West Temple in front of us.
The road leads down through Elephant Cove* and we took the turn off for Harris Mtn. This is looking back toward the Cove and Elephant Butte.*Elephant Cove, Elephant Gap, and Elephant Butte all get their name from the early effort of pioneers to harvest timber on top of Elephant Butte using elephants to haul the timber down from the top to the sawmill below. Like the US Army's trial with camels in the American Southwest deserts, it never really caught on and the last elephant died just before the turn of century.
Jared's been away too long. He's forgotten you don't pet cactus!
Are we there yet?
By the way, there never were any elephants.
