Friday capped a week of homecoming events for Kanab High School. Apparently it was the 100th anniversary of the first graduating class from the high school. I'd always assumed it must have been earlier, since Kanab was settled in 1870. It turns out that while there had been schools, this was the first time an actual high school had been established.
Danny was on the Junior class float, but he ignored us when we hollered at him to turn around. Why is it that kids have selective hearing?Sidetrail: And another thing that bugs me is that whenever you call them on their cell phones they let it go to voice mail and then claim they must have been "out of the service area", yet when their friends call they immediately pick it up.
Side sidetrail: We have a couple of "dead spots" right here in town! Tom's Canyon is kind of sketchy at times and, surprisingly, just on the east side of town by Wendy's and Chamberlain's. The boys like to take advantage of that fact.
Our homecoming opponent this weekend was Parowan. Our football team this year has been struggling a bit (in fact, the next couple of years look kind of rocky). To add to the pressure, we haven't lost to Parowan in football in over 30 years!
At half time, all former alumni of KHS were invited out onto the field to sing the old school song. While many of the newer graduates did not know the words, the rest belted it out big time. Some of you may recognize some faces from the past in the above photo. Anna Deal Black, who graduated in the 1930s was the oldest living alumnus they could find. Also on hand were Cloyd Chamberlain, Neil Crosby, and Calvin Johnson who played on the first football team in 1941.
As you can see, the end result was sweet, as the Cowboys outlasted the Rams 28-21.

Oh, KHS, Oh, KHS, I must say that the newer (old) song in better - Fight on ye mighty Cowboys - lots more umph to it! Garrett's a fan of Bobcat Blue though!

What a blast! I would have loved being there too. Although it's been so many years I probably wouldn't even recognize any of my old classmates. KHS oh KHS...anyone remember all the words?
Elizabeth, you would have been surprised at how many people you would recognize. Just in the picture I posted you can see Kevin Glazier, Peg, Jeri Chamberlain, Cloyd and Larue, Matt Brown, Nyle Willis, Que Johnson and Kenny Riggs. Rosa Lee Riggs is next to Peg mostly obscured by whatsername. Oh, and Marlin Brown in right behind Que.
Rachel, I'm with Andy on the song. 'KHS, oh KHS' has a moral weight and authority that the so-called KHS Fight Song cannot hope to match. And tell Garrett that Bobcat Blue is a pale imitation of Big Red.
