Youtube made it seem so easy. The water pump went out on Cass's truck and we were assured by the shade tree mechanics on several Youtube videos that replacing it was a fairly simple job. I had replaced one once in the far distant past on the big Pontiac Bonneville while I was at BYU. My general rule of thumb when I attempt a do-it-yourself project that it will take 2-3 times as long as "they" say it should and this particular project held true to form...and then some! After removing the shroud and a couple of water hoses, the belt, and the idler pulley and other odds and ends by contorting our arms, wrists, hands, and fingers to undo various bolts and clips. we were able to lift the pump out with the fan and fan clutch. You are supposed to removed the fan and clutch first so it comes out easier but even with the special wrench that Mike loaned us we couldn't get it to budge.
To make a long story short, after finding out that most garages were closed (Saturday, duh) and the one that was open said the pump had to be on the engine block for him to remove it, we went to Plan B. Plan B consisted of a big pipe wrench, Mike's wrench, a hammer, and brute force. As you can see by the pic above we were successful and it didn't take long at all to finish the job. Well, we think we're finished. At least it wasn't leaking when I left to come home!
