While we were there, Jared took us to Mammoth Cave National Park. It's only about 40 miles from where he lives.
One of the first uses of Mammoth Cave by modern man (as opposed to unmodern man) was as a source of saltpeter used in the manufacture of black powder. Mammoth Cave's saltpeter was an important resource the Continental Army took advantage of during the Revolutionary War. The photo above shows some of the mining structures used during that period.
