While we were there, Jared took us to Mammoth Cave National Park. It's only about 40 miles from where he lives.
They have a whole bunch of tours available, the one we selected was the historical tour, through the first entrance discovered and covering roughly two miles. Here a mother and her son wait for Ranger Rick (I'm not kidding!) to show up and start the tour.
As we descended into the inky blackness we took one look back at the comforting light of day.
One of the first uses of Mammoth Cave by modern man (as opposed to unmodern man) was as a source of saltpeter used in the manufacture of black powder. Mammoth Cave's saltpeter was an important resource the Continental Army took advantage of during the Revolutionary War. The photo above shows some of the mining structures used during that period.
