Nearly a month ago we had a bunch of dignitaries in town for the groundbreaking of the new Jackson Flat Reservoir dam that will be built down on the old Jackson farm south of Kanab. It will encompass and replace Potter's Pond. Above we can see Bob Bennett (who lost his bid to another term in the Utah Republican convention) and just to his left is Governor Gary Herbert.
I don't believe I've ever seen so many gold shovels for a ground-breaking ceremony! The new dam is expected to be completed by next year and will be 45 feet high and 4,430 feet long. The reservoir, to be filled by spring runoff from Kanab Creek, will eventually cover 232 acres. The $12 million price tag is covered by the Kane County Water Conservancy District, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the State.
