Machu Picchu, one of the seven new wonders of the world, and justifiably so. Unknown to the outside world until 1911, it escaped the fate of other Inca towns and cities and survived relatively unscathed. At nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, it is about 3,000 feet lower than Cuzco with a correspondingly milder climate. It's true purpose is unknown, but since it lies astride the way to the jungle, it may have served as a checkpoint for trade. It's also thought to be a retreat for the Inca Pacachuti and served religious purposes as well.
We got on the train at Ollantaytambo.
The train's terminus is at Aguascalientes, a small, bustling tourist town at the base of Machu Picchu.
